NSW/ACT Youth Conference invites Varley Group as guest speaker in support of improving current job support systems


Represented by Human Resource Manager, Jan Dobbie, Varley Group took an inspirational interest in the NSW/ACT Youth Conference organized by the Australian Government’s Department of Jobs and Small Business Wednesday, 3rd April.


As an invited guest, Jan took the opportunity to speak about key actions that Varley Group undertakes to assist young people make successful transitions from school to the adult  world of employment.


Varley Group prides itself as a company that effectively demonstrates a track record working with various youth careers programs like VET, Port Stephens P-Tech, PaTH, RDA Hunter STEMships and short training programs for unemployed people within the Hunter, Sydney and Ballarat areas.  These programs have proven to be vital in the identifying passionate and committed young people for hiring as apprentices and trainees.

The conference brought together stakeholders in supporting young unemployed people to identify how to improve the current support system. The event shared many inspirational stories and case studies combined with an open mind to structuring future service models in order to skill and prepare our youth for careers and work.

Local Queensland workers building the ambulances saving lives


Growing local jobs with a Queensland workforce was the topic of conversation when Member for  Bancroft, Chris Whiting, inspected Varley Vehicles ambulance assembly line with its CEO Blaine Scarr on Thursday.


Varley Vehicles has completed about $5 million worth of work for the Queensland Ambulance Service this year, creating 30 jobs locally at its Narangba factory and another 30 Queensland jobs through the supply chain.


It is looking to expand these local operations when the Queensland Ambulance Service announces the results of a tender in the new year to complete $3 million worth of upcoming ambulance builds.

Varley Vehicles is one of four companies looking to capture some of this work.


Mr Scarr said the ambulance production line at Varley Vehicles was a real example of the Queensland Government and Mr Whiting’s commitment to a local build, with local workers and making use of the local supply chain.


“When you see a Queensland ambulance or a fire truck go driving by, know that it was engineered locally by workers from Queensland,” Mr Scarr said.


“Without the Queensland Ambulance Service’s investment in the Queensland manufacturing industry and more importantly in Varley Vehicles local operations, 30 direct Varley jobs, and another 30 local jobs downstream in the supply chain, would've been lost to the region.


“Creating local jobs and supporting high skilled manufacturing is a central plank of what our government does. Well done to Varley for having such faith in our local community, and in Queensland.” Said Mr Whiting.

This position will manage a number of engineers, designers and draftspersons ensuring both efficiency and effectiveness of processes geared towards operational excellence (both design and manufacturing phases).


There will be some requirement to directly interface with customers / potential customers and also to liaise with manufacturing and other managers. The position reports to the CEO of Varley Vehicles.

1. Your ability and success with planning and managing all aspects of engineering performance against budget, process / quality requirements and customer expectations.

2. Track record of diligence with regard to labour forecasting and control to deliver work to spec / standards on time.

3. History of properly communicating with, developing and otherwise managing a cross functional team located at various sites.

4. Strong commitment to both quality and continuous improvement systems in engineering.

5. Substantial experience in a senior engineering role within an Australian manufacturing business.

6. Genuine understanding and practical application of appropriate metrics to drive superior performance in engineering.

7. Prior experience (and success) in implementing and managing organisational change.

Varley Group Marketing Analyst, Daniel Pilipczyk

A huge congratulations is extended to our Marketing Analyst, Daniel Pilipczyk for winning the Faculty Medal within the Faculty of Business and Law at the University of Newcastle. The award will be formally presented in July at a graduation ceremony.

Daniel joined Varley in December 2016 as a Marketing Research Assistant and has since secured permanent part-time work with the Varley Group while he studies towards his PhD in economics.

The Varley Group commend Daniel on his efforts and wish him all the best in continuing his studies.

Varley Group attend Hunter Manufacturing Awards launch

 This week Varley representatives Jan Dobbie (HR Manager) and Justin England (Financial Controller) were pleased to attend the Hunter Manufacturing Awards launch dinner, which was held at the Austube Mills site in Newcastle.

The event was to celebrate the opening of the HMA nomination period for 2015. Varley are annual supporters of the awards and were honoured to be invited to attend the launch dinner. Jan and Justin both enjoyed the evening immensely, and were also treated to a tour of the Austube Mills facility as part of the event.

Varley Group look forward to participating in the Hunter Manufacturing Awards again this year, and congratulate the organisation on their fine efforts to constantly and effectively support local business. Our sincere thanks go to HMA for the chance to partake in the festivities.

Congratulations to Joel Burgess for his nomination for Apprentice of the Year 2015


Congratulations Joel!

Varley Group wishes to congratulate employee Joel Burgess on his nomination for Apprentice of the Year 2015.

Joel has been invited to attend an interview for the award nomination next week, which Joel says has given him a “huge confidence boost, knowing that I’m succeeding”.

Reflecting on his apprenticeship, Joel said that “a trade has always been a goal of mine” and that during his time with Varley he has “learned safety operations, various machine use and drawing interpretation”, as well as “personal skills like learning not to rush and taking time to achieve good work results”.

Joel also noted that his team members at Varley Group are “very friendly and helpful towards me and the other apprentices, helping us out when in need and giving tips”.

One particular project that Joel enjoyed was being there “through the ups and downs” of a recent ambulance vehicle build, and that “seeing the product being completed and sent away was satisfying”.

Joel also wishes to thank Varley Group Production Supervisor Brett English for nominating him for the award, and is “looking forward to being a full member of the team” at the end of his apprenticeship.
